Bike Helmets - Fit and Sizing Guidelines

Bike helmets are only good in terms of safety if they fit correctly. To obtain maximum protection, you need to ensure a snug, well-aligned fit which is comfortable and secure. Bicycle helmets come in a variety of sizes which may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer. Most manufacturers measure in inches and follow basic measurement guidelines.

To determine what size bike helmet you require, you need to know your head size (the circumference of your head).

Working out your Head Size

Working out your head size means measuring the circumference of your head:

  • Just measure your head in inches (or in some cases, centimetres),
  • Simply wrap a measuring tape around your head starting about an inch above your eyebrows and encircling the widest part your head,
  • Take several measurements to ensure accuracy,
  • If you do require your head size in centimetres then simply multiply head size in inches x 2.54.
